3 NimH batteries_NOT REMOVABLE !!!,
These solar string lights are unique in that the string can separate from the base. The base can then be charged in the sun in a different location when needed.
MAJOR Con:
The product would be good IF the advertised 3 NimH batteries it requires were REMOVABLE / Replaceable. BUT they ARE NOT, they are housed/ hard wired into the unit- Very Very MISLEADING since most ALL Nimh battery powered devices allow the user to replace and remove the batteries at their own discretion!
Hard wiring the batteries gives the consumer NO real way to manually power= replace/ recharge the batteries, ESPECIALLY needed on cloudy days.
There is NO benefit with this unit having NimH batteries. At this price point and lack of battery functionality, you’d be better off with a lithium batttery powered unit, that runs longer. When sun illumination is low (i.e., E. coast winter season) seek a removable NimH device. Lithium would be a last resort for solely summer use or in a year-round sunny place.
IF you care about getting good illumination even on cloudy days, DO NOT get solar units with batteries permanently hard wired into the unit. ASK the seller, CAN THE BATTERIES be easily (REMOVED)- beware some sellers try to avoid this important point. Good luck…

|Expensive but work well!,
I have to preface this review by stating that one of the three sets I bought doesn’t seem to work. I’m hoping it’s just a fluke. Amazon is replacing the set.
The two sets that do work, however, work really well. Being a solar-powered string, I expected dim lights that last only a short while. These lights are bright and can last for hours. Today we had a decent amount of sun for early December, and as of midnight the lights are still on and still bright – around 6 and a half hours after they came on.
They are a very blue-tinted white, not like the warm white of the typical incandescent mini-lights. They are also quite expensive, but for spots where you need a solar light string, they’re great!
UPDATE November 2010:
I’ve got three strings of these lights that have been outside in my yard for almost two years straight and are still functioning perfectly. I’m amazed, as most solar light strings I’ve used have not lasted long at all. These are impressive!

these lights made a dark spot under a tree brighter! There is no outlet nearby, so these solar lights were just the ticket.Now my backyard is groovy even late night.
