Masking tapes were originally made for automobile painting jobs, specifically to protect one area when doing a two-tone paint job. Temperature is one factor that affects the performance of masking tapes. It is recommended to remove the adhesive when the surface temperature is just right, meaning, when it is neither too hot (350 degrees Fahrenheit or 177 degrees Centigrade) nor too cold (around 150 degrees Fahrenheit or 66 degrees Centigrade). In too hot temperatures, there are tendencies that some adhesive residue will be left, and too cold temperatures can cause easy tearing in masking tape. These factors were considered in the manufacturing of 3M masking tapes and were the reason why the company made several types of this adhesive to address the different conditions it can be subjected to.

- Code 2693, 231, and 232 are tapes made especially for critical paint lines and for clean up removal on high valued products. It has the best holding power.
- Code 2380, 2364 and 234 are tapes with reliable masking and clean removal on surfaces. These are designed for jobs such as functional coatings or paints, splicing, and on heavy-duty materials.
- Code 2307, 200 and 2214 – these are tapes for light duty bundling and stacking. It is made to perform easy with clean removal.
This type of adhesive has found many other uses besides “masking”.
